Recently, when I attended Catholic church this gospel message was taught. The interesting part was that the priest didn't teach the rest of the story. Verses 60-63 help explain the true meaning of what Jesus was trying to teach his disciples.

"On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?" Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you? What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life." - John 6:60-63

The disciples were also thinking cannibalism just as many of you are. They were thinking out of their own flesh and not in the spirit. Jesus was actually trying to teach them about spiritual freedom through the breaking of his body and shedding of his blood on the cross for the forgiveness of sins. Many of Jesus' teachings were difficult to understand, because they are beyond the natural. He spoke from an eternal perspective, which is what made his teaching so unique.
