Of course they do, they even react when I talk about them over the phone
They have also learnt entirely on their own to open closets and cupboards and drag my stuff all over the place and play innocent when I come home |

Our cat generally ignores his name, but always answers to the sound of a fridge door opening.

Go out and buy those child-proof thingamajigs for your cupboards. If the closet door is one of those that folds down the middle, place a clothes pin at the top on outer part of the metal track. |

Last time I tried that, Mitzie dislocated her toe trying to open the cupboard. After that I decided that a bit of mess is better than lots of stress and vet bills.

Does anyone besides me like The Cat who Walked by Himself from the Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling? I always loved it when I was a child and I still do.
I used to have a Burmese cat who could open six different types of door fastenings. She was the brightest cat I've ever had. Unfortunately, she wasn't bright enough to avoid going on the busy road and getting run over. |

My kitty-cat certainly knows her name. She comes when I call her, if she's not doing anything more interesting at the moment. I've also taught her to speak. I go "Speak, Gabby!" and she goes "Meeow!". And I give her a treat.

Cats can be trained; they're not as intelligent as dogs, not as easy to train- since they have no concept of a pack structure- and not as quick to pick up on specific tricks, but they can learn.
We have one cat who remembers, even months after we first gave them to her, that we put the treats she got for Christmas in a certain place. She would race towards the TV when she saw me coming- since they were on top of the entertainment center- and leap up on the speaker, screaming and glaring at me. Last year, she started doing it again the moment my mother put up the Christmas tree. Of course, I suppose that is only more evidence of cats' Satanic connections. . -Perchance. |
