The astronauts did not go to the moon back in 1969. After liftoff they got drunk on a bottle of whiskey Buzz Aldrin snuck on board, and Michael Collins in his stupor bumped the steering wheel several degrees. The poor men wind up landing on Mars by mistake, which to their surprise find to be inhabitied by beautiful Swedish women in scantily clad dress.
Information such as this could never leak out to the general public for fear that people would think the government could do something right only when aided by booze.
