It is a red herring if the assumption is that the result has any effect on the creation vs. evolution debate.

The entropy issue often brought up by Creationists is not valid since entropy applies only to closed systems.

Starboy has a point - this thread would be more appropriate in the Science&Skepticism forum.

That entropy - like every quantity in statistical thermodynamics - fluctuates is really well-known. The formula for the mean-square deviation of entropy is derived in any advanced course on thermodynamics.

Cool

My favourite point about the not-getting-order-from-disorder claim (which is what creationists are getting at by invoking the 2LoT) is this:

It doesn't affect growth, obviously.

It equally obviously doesn’t affect reproduction.

However, the tendency towards disorder does mean that the copying process in reproduction is not perfect. There are errors. We call these errors ‘mutations’.

Selection means only those mutations that work, or work better, get through to the next round of the game. Thus selection strongly opposes the tendency to disorder in continuing lineages.

In other words, one can argue that, rather than the 2LoT making evolution impossible, it is the reason evolution is possible!

Is the sun's entropy large enough to cover evolution for argument's sake?
