Why do you bother? You always lose.

Because somewhere down deep in their little minds they know that they don't really know any more about god than an atheist knows. But if they give up making arguments they may have to start understanding the natural state of the universe. With god in the head they are happy so they have to continue to argue for the existence of a god. One thing that demonstrates the validity of this is the anger demonstrated by many xians when someone questions the existence of their god.

Why are some believers angered by disbelief? Bertrand Russell offered this explanation:

"There is something feeble and a little contemptible about a man who cannot face the perils of life without the help of comfortable myths. Almost inevitably, some part of him is aware that they are myths, and that he believes them only because they are comforting. But he dares not face this thought! Moreover, since he is aware, however dimly, that his opinions are not rational, he becomes furious when they are disputed."

Because it's the best way I know to end the rule of Yahweh and the atheist gods. I will never surrender to the powers and principalities that support atheism. I don't really know what I want to do with my life, and returning Jupiter and his cohorts to power over the world seems like as good a goal as any. Yes the Christians and I always lose, but our respective gods will reward us for trying against the modern epidemic of atheism.

I've come to the conclusion that self delusion is part and parcel of human existence. It's simply easier to believe in an afterlife and that relieves a lot of concern for many people. Believe the perceived harmless lie and get on with life.
Why do Xtian bother proseletyzing (sp?)? It makes them feel good. They are priestly apple polishers who have so deluded themselves that they believe they're scoring points with the Ultimate Santa Claus. Throw in some feelings of tremendous satisfaction, self righteousness, and superiority and what's not to understand?

On the other hand, why do some atheists go out of their way and attempt to de-convert otherwise harmless Xtians? Granted, it's good sport sometimes, but ultimately it's a futile exercise akin to teaching the ABC's to a fence post. They don't want to know. They don't care.

Seems like it. Why is it so hard for some people to admit atheism=no gods?

Yes, Ojuice5001 is one of our resident polytheists. He thinks that all major cultural trends are caused by some god or other, and therefore the cultural trends supporting atheism must be caused by gods who presumably want to remain anonymous.

May Athe have mercy on his soul.

Atheist gods...that is such an oxymoron and so false that I can't even begin to describe why it is.

Poor, poor, Ojuice5001.

Well Ojuice, here's a task for you: try and find those atheist gods who have been toying with us and get them to stop. It's really quite annoying. I would like them to fuck off please, and give me back the illusion that I have control over my life.

There is something feeble and a little contemptible about a man who cannot face the perils of life without the help of comfortable myths like Earl Doherty and other atheists bat around.

Almost inevitably, some part of him is aware that they are myths, and that he believes them only because they are comforting. But he dares not face this thought! Moreover, since he is aware, however dimly, that his opinions are not rational, he becomes furious when they are disputed.

Don't be too upset Schu.

What the fuck is Earl Doherty to me?
I'm an atheist.
I don't take for granted, or even necessarily believe, what other atheists have to say.

Besides, if you think Doherty's thesis is in any way a comfortable one, given the predominant ideology in the western world (and even here in Africa), you've been sadly led astray Radorth.
