heh heh...of course--he wasn't Spirit Filled.

But seriously--come on, any ex-fundies out there...was this really a real explanation in those circles? Seems a bit odd to me if they think it's a punishment from God that they would also think it entered the human population due to freaky monkey sex, but it's certainly not the first time the fundies have woefully contradicted themselves.

AIDS as God's punishment for gays. I'm sure the friends and family of the 580,000 children who died of AIDS in 2001 are impressed with God's mercy and righteousness. And of course, if God is targeting homosexuals, he's an incompetent engineer, since there are about as many heterosexuals with HIV as homosexuals. But then, this is the same tribal god that got pissed off and drowned the planet, so what can you expect.

I have heard from fundies that ALL diseases are sent from God to test and/or punish us. Why should AIDS be any different? A cold, influenza, childhood leukemiae (actually - they don't like to go there... Jesus loves the little children, remember, so how could he condem a neonate to a few short months of agony? er, he moves in mysterious ways, er its a test, er...)

Take a look at Job. If God can do that to people who love him and are faithful, just think what he can do to the rest of us!

edit for silly typos

Which brings up another thread I started on a Christian BBS--asking why they didn't object to teaching the germ theory of disease, which contradicts the bible just as much as evolution does, and has about the same amount of scientific evidence in support of it. I keep bumping it up about once a week--haven't gotten any real answers yet....:banghead:

Was having a (rather heated) discussion with a super-fundie on another site about HIV being God's curse for homosexuals. It eventually disintigrated into conspiracy theories (WHO changed the stats on infected homosexuals, all the cases in Africa are really due to bisexuals, etc.) So this became more and more surreal--and then he brought out the big guns: in the beginning of the epidemic, scientists held the hypothesis that HIV had entered the human population when someone had sex with a monkey. Of course, he had no references for this (or any) of his assertations--but at least I'd heard most of them before. This one threw me for a loop--and he blamed the fact that I hadn't heard it on my "being young" (and admittedly, the AIDS epidemic started in the U.S. when I was about 5, but I didn't want to admit that to him...)

So my question is, is he right? I highly, highly, highly doubt that scientists ever believed that--but was that a belief held by fundies or something? Do they really think Africans are out having sex with monkeys?
I remember hearing such a rumor many years ago. But it is too long ago to remember any particular source. It is likely that this rumor started from people saying that this disease originated with monkeys and/or chimpanzees, and since it is generally transmitted between humans via sexual activity, that it was assumed that that was how humans first got the disease.

In any case, it is certainly possible, even if it is more likely to have occurred from eating them or handling them for eating. After all, some people in the U.S. have sex with animals, so why not people in Africa as well?
