Default Meaning of 'unequally yoked'

Someone posted in the Secular Forums that they didn't know what 'unequally yoked' (which is from a Bible verse) meant.

Here's a link that explains it, from a Christian point of view.

Unequally Yoked

That verse, and its explanation, are hardly a paragon of religous tolerance, are they?

From the site you linked to:

Quote:
Spiritually: becoming attached to a person who does not share your faith in Jesus Christ as Savior can be just as painful and counterproductive as the illustration of the unequally yoked animals. Whether attached financially (as in a business partnership) or emotionally (as a spouse), you are connected to someone who cannot "pull" equally with you in life.
So this is telling a christian NOT to marry, (be friends with?), or be a business partner with a non-christian.

The bible quotes linked to on that page support this position eg:

Quote:
Deuteronomy 7
3 Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons, 4 for they will turn your sons away from following me to serve other gods, and the LORD's anger will burn against you and will quickly destroy you.
The web site them goes on to some appolgetics about being patient and waiting for her husband to come to the Lord, but basically, if you take the links she's given - she is already hosed.

Thank you for the link, Helen.

My husband used this as the reason why he didn't attend a church after my deconversion. (Which is strange, because he didn't attend a church before my deconversion.) I don't know if it was an attempt at emotional blackmail or just a reasonable excuse not to get up on Sunday mornings.

My wife's parents threw this one at her before we got married. Obviously it didn't make a bit of difference. Besides, I'm not an ox...

Now that I know what it means, it makes my teeth grind worse than they did before. *sigh*

This idea also drove me nuts for the longest of time, so you are not alone. It took me a bloody long time to "let go" of my resentments with respect to this irrational, twisted, and downright debasing idea until I realized that I should consider myself intellectually WAY above such pettiness to quench my anger.
