A handy prayer handbook
Resident Shrub has urged all Americans to pray. Lucky for me, a devout recently downsized colleague left behind a small booklet titled Pray for Our Nation: Scriptural Prayers to Revive Our Country. (It's published by Harrison House, Tulsa, OK, copyright 1999.) It has sample prayers (with accompanying scriptural bases) for our leaders, social welfare, safety and spiritual growth. Naturally, among our leaders, prayers for the President come first, followed by Congress; but the poor Supreme Court comes a lowly fifth after "Decisions in National Crisis" and the economy! My favorite is the prayer for our foreign relations, but my sweetheart's is the one for our national morality. The ones for our schools, educational system, and educators are great too, but I think the best might actually be for The Peace of Israel: "... I know that soon Jesus will make His triumphal entry through the eastern gate at His return to the earth. Jerusalem will be the seat of government for all the earth.... Father, Jesus said that there would be unrest in Israel until He came again, because Israel will never know any real peace until the Prince of Peace returns...." Oh--and of course, there's a website, too!

OH yeah, you've gotta know that praying will stop all the bad things from happening.
And to be so concieted to think that we, the USA, have god's favor over all other people of the world is ridiculous. Fantastically so. If there is a god, my impression of that being is that he/she/it could give a damn about the earth at all. He/she/it certainly has done no good in the past oh, say, 2000 years. But yes, lets all petition god for the president and the economy. Lets hope that he sets all aright in this grand USA while at the same time forgetting about all those HIV infected people in Africa. I am getting so incredibly sick of this new xtian movement. GRRRRRrrrrrrrrr... |

More proof that prayers aren't really "petitions to God" at all; they're really just another attempt to change reality by wishing reality to change and invoking a specific ritual, better known as magic.
