First, there are no demonstrable "evolutionary mechanisms".
I believe Rufus answered this. Also check out that thread you started about "good mutations anyone?"

Second, you don't need to understand cell division and mutations in great detail to know that precious little evidence exists to support the various theories which claim that some such mechanism(s) is in operation in nature.
But John...if the various theories regarding evolutionary mechanisms involve cell division and mutations, then wouldn't you absolutely have to understand these concepts in order to conclude they support evolution?

I'm very confused about how someone can simultaneously 1) reject that genetic mechanisms exist and 2)state that genetic mechanisms do exist but don't explain evolution without understanding what genetic mechanisms even are.

Then again, I'm one of those crazy people who don't believe critics of movies unless I know the critic has actually seen the movie. I know, it's insane...

Do you want me to reply intelligibly, or not?

To the great relief of many (hah!), I have decided to purchase a comprehensive, 1,100-page text that will assist me in evaluating the claims that have been made here. What is it, you ask?

Molecular Cell Biology, 4th edition, by Lodish, et al.

It is on it way to me now. I greatly anticipate what I will learn in reading that book. Of course, I will focus first on topics that pertain to our discussion here. Please be patient, since I have full intention of returning to this thread well-equipped for a technically astute and in-depth discussion.

Oh, no. The guy who doesn't know the basics of genetics thinks he can just pick up the topic by reading an upper-division/graduate level text in molecular biology? You have got to be kidding me.

My predictions:

a) we can look forward to quote mining galore

- or -

b) Vanderzyden is going to have to disappear for a few years while he gets some remedial biology so he can comprehend the great big book he just bought.

My money is on (a).

PZ,

I realize that I am your "pet project" here at Infidels. So, permit me to make a suggestion that will help you cure yourself of your inordinately high confidence:

Go back to this thread and provide a substantial rebuttal to my last set of arguments. (I notice that you have been strangely absent.) Then, come back here and make these ridiculous remarks.

This is not an insult, it is a guess: You think that your credentials and your specialization give you special privilege to the truth. Again, I will say: there is no greater mistake. It seems that you also think that these concepts are immensely difficult to grasp. What you fail to realize is that your posts give all the indications that you are highly trained, but have not pursued a comprehensive education.

Tell me where I am in error, or kindly avoid posting anymore distractive and tangential material that refers to me.

Excellent!

That's the recommended text for the med school here - of course I didn't buy it, choosing instead to rely on the outdated 3rd edition that I had to buy for grad school.

Maybe if you decide to 'convert', or you don't want it anymore, you can donate it to me!

all cell biology textbooks are outdated, even the most recent editions. Its even worse with developmental biology textbooks.

Why should any of us? We do and you insist that you are not in error, but the people who know what they're doing in this field, who have vast amounts of knowledge and experience in their favor, somehow, by cosmic coinicidence, ALL happen to be DEAD FUCKING WRONG.

Pet project? Lost cause.
