That it's a lack of belief.

The first thing to observe is that most words have more than one meaning, and therefore it can be difficult to say things that will be true of all possible meanings. (Look in a typical dictionary, and you will usually find multiple definitions of single words, that are usually related to each other, but not identical to each other.)

Often, in philosophical circles, the terms "atheist", "theist", and "agnostic" are used thusly:

A theist is someone who believes in a god or gods (monotheism is belief in one god, polytheism is belief in more than one god, etc.).

An atheist is someone who believes that there are no gods.

An agnostic is someone who does not know whether there are any gods or not. This may be because they have not yet found sufficient evidence one way or the other, or they may believe that it is impossible to obtain sufficient evidence.

With the above notions in mind, being an atheist does involve having a belief. However, if we look at the etymology of the word "atheist", the prefix "a-" originally signified "not", so originally an "atheist" was someone who is not a theist, which would include those who are agnostics, and those who regard the term "god" as a meaningless expression (these people are sometimes called "ignostics", a word which, I see from a quick search of the internet, is also used sometimes with a different meaning). So with the original meaning, it would not necessarily involve any particular belief. And, of course, the original meaning is still used today, though, I think, less commonly than the meaning stated above.

It has always been my belief that atheism is a lack of belief. This the theist devils never understand, no matter how many times I repeat myself, no matter how many irrefutable arguments I throw at them.

Tell them you do not own a Maserati. Is not owning a Maserati a means of owning a Maserati?

The verb "to believe" is active and requires an object, either direct or indirect.
e.g.
"I believe Johnny"
or
"I believe in miracles"

As an atheist has no religious beliefs, I suggest that the next time a xian insisits that you have a belief, ask him to define exactly what that belief is.

It's definitionally true. No arguments are necessary.

An atheist is someone who lacks belief in divine beings. It's as simple as that. If someone wants to define the word differently, simply say that they are talking about something other than what you are talking about.
