Post Judge Alfred Goodwin

I'm sure you all have heard this quote before,

Quote:
The San Francisco-based court has more reversals by the U.S. Supreme Court -- 12 out of 17 cases this term -- than any other circuit.
That may well be, but according to the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

Quote:
Fewer than six of the 761 rulings he has written have resulted in re-hearings before the entire Ninth Circuit. Only a few of those led to reversal — and fewer still were reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The article that contained the quote above, goes further on with.. ( http://www.washtimes.com/op-ed/20021021-93651176.htm )

Quote:
... the judicial track record of this World War II Army captain is described in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, a non-ideological newspaper of legal news and analysis, as "a judge's judge." He is known by fellow judges, law clerks and lawyers who have appeared before him in his 47 years on the bench as apolitical, independent and, until now, remarkably free of controversy.
Quote:
Ronald Olson, a partner in a Los Angeles law firm, says the judge is "an extraordinarily fair-minded judge who does not come to any case with any sort of overpowering ideology." And Michael Berman, a lawyer and former clerk for Judge Goodwin, says: "He won't shy away from results that are unpopular, but he has very little ego. He is unafraid of where the law leads."
I still think their is hope for this .... Thoughts?!

Question

I'm wondering what prompted this column all of a sudden.

Nat Hentoff is a long time civil libertarian and first amendment advocate. (He must be the token leftist at the Washington Times.) This viewpoint is what I would expect from him. There's no telling what prompted it.
