Damn, I'm going to have to join this Baptist Board. I don't want to feel left out!
I want to get banned too!!! I'm wondering if they'll ban me over at ARN, even though I'm taking great care to not use ad hom, swear words or bad spelling. [ March 12, 2002: Message edited by: Wyrdsmyth ]</p> |

Unitarian-Universalism, as far as I know, is the only religion which accepts, even embraces, Atheism. Many UU's are Atheists (myself included). Check out UUA.org. They have a "HUUmanist" mailing list to which I used to subscribe.

Please tell me y'all don't visit other "religious" boards trying to convince them that god does not exsist! You don't try to recruit members for this board do you? You know...get that seed planted and then conveniently leave a link to this site?
Shaking my head sadly........ |

I post on the BaptistBoard for fun and interest.
I like discussing religion and I enjoy challenging and being challenged, particularly about my beliefs. Talking with people who agree with you is fine but it gets repetitive after a while. As to convincing people, what is wrong with that? If you believe that what you believe is true, why wouldn't you want other people to also hold true beliefs, especially when they may impact upon thw world (Evolution v Creation)? I have no problem with Christians trying to convert me provided they do so in appropriate ways and places. I am even (usually) polite to Jehovah Witnesses and Mormons, who try to convert in inappropriate places imo. |

Oops--guess all that being raised Catholic really made me "religious". |

Just for the heck of it I took the Beliefnet test and scored a 17, which isn't on the scale either
Probably could've scored even lower if some of the questions had offered responses that were closer to what I actually believe: i.e.- "Religious faith is a demonstrably dangerous idea." Oh well. And I absolutely LOVE the little "but you wouldn't be here if there weren't some hope for you" line tacked on to the lowest score category. Sure, they've completely excluded the worst of the worst (since scoring less than 25 doesn't even seem to rate a mention), but I guess you gotta give 'em credit for trying to reach even the most borderline "hardcore skeptics." Sorry -- laughing uncontrollably now... |

I'll happily converse on any forum or board. I'm not just a secular troll, either -- I'll happily engage anyone on a serious discussion of ideas. But often, I'll make some initial points with satire, "throwing rocks at the hornet's nest," so to speak. But really, I'm not just out to irritate, any more than Socrates was when he was nicknamed the "gadfly of Athens." Socrates wasn't just trying to irritate Euthyphro was he? ("Get away from me, you impious troll.")
One of the great joys of the internet is that people can discuss many of the traditionally 'sensitive' subjects, like politics, religion and philosophy, without it getting personal... and without anyone being sentenced to drink hemlock. If someone gets all hot and red-faced and insulted, you can't even see it. And everyone has ample chance to think about and compose (and even edit) their responses, instead of feeling flat-footed by some pithy remark... and typically, in many live debates, you have these factors really interfering with what I would call a serious exchange of ideas. At least in my experience. |
