it is totally unfair to lump NES and SNES into one age! |

I don't know... the types of games played on both were similar. Sprite-based graphics, side-scrolling platform based action games, top-down view rpg's, etc... the main advantage of the SNES was better graphics and sound, but the gameplay remained largely unchanged until the playstation ushered in 3D gaming on the console.

Last night I was with some friends and their 16-year old was glued to the TV playing this game. I didn't really watch him that long, but it seemed more ridiculous than anything. However, the bit about having sex with hookers and then killing them--I don't care how you package that, it's terrible.

Unless you're someone who only likes football games or what have you...In which case, your hatred is understandable. And as for Playstation being the best console for RPG's...I have just three words for you. Beyond the Beyond. What a turd. *Edit* - Oh crap, I did NOT mean to imply that killing a hooker is somehow any more acceptable than killing a police officer is, or any variant of that. *shielding face* *closing can of worms* |

Michael Moore interviews Marilyn Manson and talks about video games and their influence on kids (among other things). Namely: Japanese kids rabidly play the most violent games there are, yet dont go shooting up their school. In Germany and northern Europe they listen to the hardest of death metal, yet they don't go shooting up their school. What is different in America? On the morning of April 20, before they went on a shooting spree, Harris and Kleybold went bowling. Michael Moore says it makes as much sense to blame bowling as it does to blame video games or music for the violence in America. |

I remeber reading some stupid column where someone claims Vice City is sexist cause you sleep with prostitutes and then kill them.
Look, its a crime game. You can beat up and kill anyone. |

Are you not degrading someone here as well as killing them? Would lynching all the black people in the game also be acceptable? If not, why is it different? |

I've worked in video game development for 10 years, and I've seen a lot of crap written about violence and the links with gaming.
Both sides seem to be guilty of being very selective of their evidence: that which supports their viewpoint is demonstration that they've been right all along; that which contradicts is flawed in some way. What seems obvious, from taking a step back, is that there is truth in both arguments. If there is a link between violent video games and real-life violence (perhaps subtle, perhaps less so), then the consequences are disturbing enough to merit close attention. For now, the jury is still out. In the meantime, I am pretty fed up with the libertarian bleat that one's civil liberties will have been fundamentally violated if they are prevented from screwing and beating up a virtual whore. Just for the record, I bought GTA:VC before Xmas. I admire the technology; some of the missions are fun, some are dull; some of it is in poor taste; I am now a bit bored with it. Next! |

I am very uncomfortable with the "action" in Grand Theft Auto that allows sex with prostitutes and then killing them to get your money back if it wasn't good. Unfortunately, we have this game in our house. I've banned it from my 12 year old; I've given up with the 15 year old--we've had many discussions about my uneasiness. I think relationships between men and women are difficult enough without this sort of influence.
So am I worrying needlessly or should I "misplace" their game? |
