Default Starting Off on the Right Foot

Hi, I've got a strange question. I vaguely remember mention here of a vestigial muscle in human feet, something we don't need because our feet don't have monkeylike "thumbs."

Can anybody tell me the name of this muscle, and perhaps tell me where to find more info on it? Without the name, I was pretty much drawing blanks on search engines.

I think you are looking for the Plantaris muscle.

"Hay-foot, straw-foot, slew-foot, drag,
Swing your honey to the sugar-foot rag........"

I think WK is right

You might also try a google on human foot anatony, and work from there. It might expand your research.

And welcome to II!

Hi Persidian, and welcome to Infidels!

You might also like to look into the extensor coccygis muscle, which would move our tail if it were still a tail; the arrectores pilorum muscles that make our hair stand up (especially handy in women ); and the post-auricular muscle (wiggling our ears being just sooo useful that it was part of god’s design for us ).

Cheers, Oolon

Just wondering: is the dominant trait of "tongue rolling" (the ability to roll one's tongue) a vestigial remnant of any ancestors?

Some of our ancestors were giraffes?

Who'da thunk it?
