Ted Williams was an atheist?
Did any of you read the article?
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/2002/07/08/williams_cryonics/ quoting from the last paragraph: "Ted wanted to be cremated," former teammate Johnny Pesky noted. "He was an atheist. He didn't believe in religion." Has this been confirmed in any other sources? I wonder how all the conservative pundits would reconcile the atheism of baseball icon Ted Williams with all the recent anti-atheist garbage they've been spewing. |

See the thread on Media and Popular Culture.
One confirmatory point is that Williams requested that there be no funeral service. I thought this to be unusual enough that I actually *posited* that Williams might be an atheist, before I saw the SI article. It looks to me like this is genuine, although I'd love to have a family member confirm it. |

Don't you see? God helped the Red Sox win all those games, and helped Brother Ted set his record batting average, to prove to him that God loves us. But Ted's heart was too hardened, so he never saw the miracles before his own eyes.

Ted once said, "God gets you to the plate. But once you're there you're on your own." |
