In God We Trust: Hypothetical Testimony
The local state legislature is considering a law that will require the posting of "In God We Trust" on all public buildings. As I considered the option to testify, the attached scene came into my mind.
I hope you find it at least mildly entertaining and useful. |

Excellent. Your writing style, and the character's logic, reminds me of John Galt. (That's a compliment.)

It was a interesting. I can imagine the scene in reality being a lot worse, or a lot more confused, but to write it out that way would border on pandering.
I've got to say, though: people who think of these laws want to divide the population. They think it's the right to do because their holy book says there's a moral imperative to subjugate (at worst, and ignore at least) those who aren't of their faith. Remember, the religious hard-liners who wrote the Old Testament claim that YHWH set the empires of the day upon Judah and Israel for their religious impurities... for letting the common people worship the deities of neighbor states, and marry across religions. The hard-liners of today think (to varying degrees) that Islamic terrorism will wipe this country off the globe with their god's active assistance because religious minorities are welcomed here. |

Hi Alonzo - welcome back. We wondered where you were.
If you local newspaper has an op ed section, you might try to get your scenario published there. |

Let's just say that the November elections left me in a "What is the frippen use?!" state of mind.
I am making some attempts to get different versions of this published locally. Nothing to report so far. (Though I got an email who suggested putting it on as a skit -- somehow.) |

Glad to see you back Alonzo Fyfe. I don't post here often, but I visit these boards almost daily and I always enjoyed your outstanding, reasoned posts. I hope you will remain active here.
Your scene was excellent! My only suggestion is to include a reference or two to Christopher's nervousness in the monologue. How did he feel while doing all that talking? Dry mouth ... stumbled over words ... talked real fast ... etc. What were the physical reactions of the board members. Were they all listening closely? Was one looking bored, disgusted, mad? I don't know what you intend to do with this piece, but I think adding a little bit of description during the monologue couldn't hurt. just my 2 cents ... |

Alonzo, that was freakin' AWESOME! Now, you just wrote that? Would you mind if I (or others) borrowed relevant parts of that for letters-to-the-editor or in fact if some such public meeting should occur? (I'd be more than willing to give proper credit, of course.)

I wrote this for the purpose of combatting a growing evil that I see in this country (and the world), and I would be pleased and honored at any use that you may find for my words in combatting that same evil. Credit does not matter to me. Make use of my arguments as you see fit. And if they have done you some good, drop me a line. That would please me more than anything. |

I am here at least long enough to complete a project that would satisfy a goal I set for myself 25 years ago. The first part of that project can be found in the forum "Secular Lifestyles and Support" in a thread called "Ethics Without God: A Personal Journey." It will take a while. In the mean time, I hope to have time to make a few additional contributions such as this one. Which I hope will not only be enjoyed, but that people can find opportunities to put them to use. Your suggestions have merit. Perhaps writing such as that which I attempted here needs more of a story element -- something closer to Ayn Rand and a bit further away from Plato. |
