So if Sundays don't count, does that mean it's ok to drink, eat meat, go out to eat, etc, do whatever you said you're giving up, on Sundays?

Arrow I've given up cholate for lent, all except the fairly traded kind.

There's terrible slavery and torture involved in the growing of the cocoa which we in the developed world enjoy eating. I've given up eating chocolate and cocoa unless I'm sure it hasn't been produced in such ways. Here's links showing why I don't want the wrong type of chocolate.
Mali's children in chocolate slavery, by BBC's Humphrey Hawksley in Mali.
Slavery Free Chocolate, By Brooke Shelby Biggs.
Is There Slavery In Your Chocolate? By John Robbins.
La Siembra Co-op, home of Cocoa Camino.
The fairly traded cocoa and chocolate tastes so good its not a sacrifice to eat it. And I feel good about eating it. I don't have to feel guilty.
I haven't only given up cruelly produced cocoa and chocolate for lent. If its worth giving something up for lent its worth giving it up for the rest of the year as well.

Thank you for the information. First step is awareness.

I do agree with you that giving something up for lent is usually worth giving it up for the rest of the year--especially since in most Christian concepts the idea is that you are simplifying your life to reomove obstacles in your ability to focus on God and your faith. I say usually because some of the things people give up aren't harmful, in and of themselves, but are things that those people focus too much on, ignoring important things in their lives.

oriecat: What I have read is that Sundays are like "little Easters", and they're not counted--but I can't seem to find if that means you aren't obliged to not do whatever it is? Like I said, new to me!

Hey, you Catholics & ex-Catholics, you probably know! What's the deal?

Not Catholic or ex-Catholic, so take it with a grain of salt, but from what I understand the only day that you get off is St. Patrick's Day. I always wondered how Irish Catholics could get away with eating corned-beef and cabbage and drinking beer on St. Patrick's Day, when it falls during Lent, and then yesterday I read this in our very own Infidels library:

Quote:
Until the 17th century, St. Patrick's Day, like most other holidays, was simply another "holy day" observed by the church. St. Patrick's Day falls during the Christian season of Lent, however, and Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. One of the big reasons for this holiday remaining on the books is because it was the one day during lent that prohibitions against meat were waived and people could dance, drink, and feast instead of the standard lent starvation.
Hmph! Learn something new every day. As for Sundays, I don't know.

Sunday is not a day of fasting and you are probably confused in protestant theology.

Amos, sorry if I'm asking you to repeat yourself, but I'm not 100% clear. Does that mean the same as whatever one gives up for Lent, they can still have it on Sundays?

Gosh Jennifer, I really don't know. I am not a theologian and a poor Catholic.

Do you mean that Sundays during Lente are exempt? My excuse was always that "I work hard" and are exempt from anything I may wish to be exempt from.

Many years ago I gave up Lent for Lent, and haven't observed it since!

But, I think I'll give up:

winning the lottery
making millions of $$$ from doing nothing
having sex with 10 women a day
and going to church!
Oh wait! I don't do any of those anyway! HA ha! Silly me!

That's another thing I hated when I was a kid, flaming lent. Usually the thing to give up would be picked for you being a mere child and more often than not it was sweeties Six weeks is a longgggggg time without sweeties when you're really young.
