The big news in my neck of the woods...summary: a 3yr old murdered and her 10 yr sister critically wounded in a stabbing. Their assailants were a 16 yr old girl and her 19 yr old brother who had just left a casino after an altercation with the girls' mother and her boyfriend over 125.00. The 19yr old's girlfriend was in the car My questions 1. What were the girls doing home alone at 1:30am? What kind of mother is this? 2. What kind of financial dealings would two adults have with two teenagers? Since the teens knew where they lived they must have known each other for some time...drugs maybe? 3. What kind of parents raised these teens that they are even capable of this act? 4. What were a 19 and 16 yr old doing in a Casino in the middle of the night? The whole situation just makes me sick and confused...what kind of world is this? PS The teens confessed apparently and will be tried as adults for first degree murder and may face the death penalty |

Yep, pretty disgusting story. Death penalty seems appropriate to me.

If you've ever seen the movie "Parenthood", Keanu Reeves issues (the only intelligent dialog I've heard him utter) a wise and observant statement that seems apropos to these circumstances.

Hiya, Lady Shea.
The link doesn't work for me?! But from what I can gether, this is something that is becoming almost epidemic. We have kids committing violent acts of murder here, too. And there has been at least one *famous* case of a couple of 10 yr old(?) boys murdering a 2 year old in Liverpool, England - and many cases similar. Scary stuff, huh. I'm not sure about the death penalty, though. From what I can gather, it doesn't do anything to stop vicious crimes, and apparently the States that do employ the death penalty have far worse crime statistics - but I'm not 100% sure of that. Root causes of such atrocious things need to be studied and understood more, so we can best handle some kind of early prevention programme - either within families as units, or within society and youth as a whole. But, as for that particular 16 and 19 year old - yuk. (Yuk = the more pathetic understatement of the year! |

Just go to http://www.lvrj.com its the front page story.
Yes, the root causes need to be addressed...the mothers behavior is also a huge issue in this...thats why I call them garbage people, its like a whole subset of society...some people think its acceptable to leave little girls alone in a trailer while their mother is out gambling and having shady financial deals. I think in this case the death penalty would be seen (and supported) as a punishment and removes two sociopaths from society...I don't think it's possible for executions to be a deterrant because they are not public. It's just another news story about another person being killed. I personally have mixed feelings on the subject...in this case, my first reaction was "Too bad they didn't get a trigger happy cop", but in other cases I think the evidence is too weak (like the West Memphis Three). I just don't know what the answer is ![]() |

What kind of mother is this? The older was 10. That's old enough that being alone doesn't inherently mean something's wrong--there could have been other arrangements. I was left home alone in the evenings sometimes younger than that--if some problem did come up that I couldn't deal with I knew I could go to the next door neighbor's apartment (internal passageway or climb over a railing to their balcony, no need to go outside). This was simply because it worked better than babysitters I didn't like. I have no idea how late they might have been out. 2. What kind of financial dealings would two adults have with two teenagers? Since the teens knew where they lived they must have known each other for some time...drugs maybe? Agreed, this is a problem. 4. What were a 19 and 16 yr old doing in a Casino in the middle of the night? Just about every casino has a buffet also--perhaps they were eating? |
