Harwood's wager
<a href="http://www.philosophers.co.uk/portal_article.php?id=26" target="_blank">In Praise of Zeus</a>
Hard to say how this paper should be taken, but my fellow Reconstructionist Pagans like it. Mediterreanean paganism can compete with Christianity in most arenas (makes me wonder why we lost ), and divine wagering is one of them. Enjoy! |

Inspired by Tercel's Pascal's Wager thread, I am bumping this thread up. I have to wonder why Tercel's thread got 22 replies in its pre-RRP stage alone, and mine didn't get any. Is it because Roman paganism is safely marginalized, and Christianity is less so? Is it because no one bothered to follow the link? Is it because this wager is actually far superior to the Christian wager? Send it to RRP (or elsewhere) if you must, but try not to let it go unanswered this time.

It was because the article was 1) a good parody of Pascal's wager and 2) so good that no reply was needed.
I guess I need to get off this computer and go worship a tree for a while. See ya. |

I think the Homeric gods lost out (Homer himself didn't appear to take them very seriously) because they didn't have a book to mix up plausible real history with the mythology. Bertrand Russell makes this point very strongly in his History of Western Philosophy. Most people seem to be unaware that the Greek gods really did heal illnesses, just as Christ is said to have done. At Epidaurus there are monuments with inscriptions from the grateful beneficiaries of the ministrations of Asklepios. |

I know. It is my hope that I can create a strategy that really will halt the rising tides of atheism, and return the world to a proper worship of Jupiter and friends. And it must be done without the use of force too. Such a strategy exists, but Harwood's wager isn't it.

I'm not inclined to move it now because I think discussions of why Pascal's Wager is a pile of crap (even when it's called "game theory") is a legit topic for this forum. But, ironically, Pascal's Wager itself is such a tired cliche' of an argument that I'd prefer not to muddy the waters in a serious forum. So off to RRP. However, if this thread becomes a discussion of why it's not in RRP instead of the actual article, it might as well get moved. |
