As a parent it is truly difficult to tell your child that she can stand up and refuse to mouth that garbage, and that sometimes the teacher is wrong. Then you have armed your child for everytime they think the teacher is wrong.

The National Anthem? I'm going through the words in my head and don't come up with it.

Okay, I see it at

Anthem text

Didn't remember there were 4 versus. I thought maybe Ashcroft substituted "God Bless America" for the "Star Spangled Banner".

I talked to my dad about the pledge before WW2 (he's old enough to remeber). It seems that up until WW2 the pledge was said with a raised right hand! With the US fighting th Nazis it was changed to the current hand over your heart. I question whether or no it's right to indoctrinate kids with patriotism at all. Nationalism is a ridiculouss concept that stands in the way of human survival.

Saw that story in the paper this morning and find it adds to my sense of slowing drowning in this sea of half-thought.

What? America changed an honored and cherished ceremony because of the actions of a dictator in a foreign land? Folks, we are being robbed of our God-given American heritage and freedoms. We shouldn't let tyrants take away what belongs to us in the first place. And the current administration is creating a climate perfect for the restoration of this dear salute. Think of all the WWII veterans who will cry when they see this salute finally restored.

Restore the salute, I say!

After the whole 9/11 thing, many baseball teams started playing GBA during the 7th inning stretch. My favorite team, the New York Yankees, kept on playing it throughout the end of the season. It was played, "In rememberance of the tragic events of September 11th...," but is now played, "To honor our men and women serving overseas ...," first in Afghanistan, and more recently in Iraq. I'm just wondering how much longer they'll keep finding excuses to play it. Whatever happened to, "Take me out to the ballgame?" W said we needed to get back to living our lives, well part of that was hearing TMOTTBG during the 7th inning stretch! Grrr!

We went to the circus last month and they sang "God Bless America" after the national anthem. To be honest, I couldn't see why they had to sing either. They don't sing songs when I go to the theater or before a movie starts, but it appears that anything resembing a sporting event requires it.
