Religious differences question
What are the major differences between Baptist and Methodist ideology? I didn't have much religion in my upbringing (yea!), so I'm clueless on some basic questions.

I do know that both accept the other as Christian. Methodists are an older denomination and so tend to keep traditions that have Chatholic roots... of course, Methodists are reformed though. Baptists (you almost have to be clear on what kind of Baptist you are talking about because there are so many sects) see water emersion as a main focus, while Methodists (from my understanding) will baptize babies and simply "spinkle" water on for baptisim. |

Somewhere I've seen a nifty little table that listed the major Xian sects, and some of the differences between them like do they believe in transubstantiation (Catholics do, most protestants don't), baptism (full immersion vs. sprinkling), stance on predestination/freewill, faith vs. works to get in to heaven, belief in the trinity, etc.
Anyone have that handy? [ August 01, 2002: Message edited by: BigJim ]
|

This page on Religous Movements at the University of Virginia is a good place to look. Here are the pages on the United Methodist Church (US) and the Souther Baptists (US). The Methodist denomination was founded by John and Charles Wesley in England in 1744. The Baptist Denomination was founded by John Smith in 1605 in England. The first Baptist church in America was founded in Providence in 1639. See here for short comparisons of Christian sects. |

This might be helpful, too. I don't know for sure, I haven't really read much of the Christianity section - but it's led me to some interesting sites.

bltl6 -
The Baptists have split so many times that I'd assume many if not most current Baptist denominations bear little resemblance beyond the name and a few basic beliefs to the one John Smith founded. |
