Thumbs up

Wow, you have four actual Republicans in your state Senate (along with 14 fake ones).

Cool.

Thanks for the heads-up, DBP! That's a win for everyone in the state (though I doubt anyone could ever convince Sen. Bruce "This does not establish any one religion" Cairns of that fact).

And what exactly makes a Republican fake?

My rudimentary understanding of American politics has led me to believe that Republicans have generally stood for smaller government. And I thought that political conservatism in general stood for the fierce, independent ruggedness of the American frontier, and all that get-the-government-out-of-my-face sort of thing.

So it often surprises me to see Republicans supporting these goofy initiatives, which strike me as the most useless, irrelevant, and ridiculous pieces of legislation imaginable (not to mention blatantly unconstitutional, another alleged fixation of Republicans).

But I must admit I was being slightly facetious and I do understand that there still are Republicans around that do fit the above description. Unfortunately these "social conservatives" (i.e. "fake Republicans") seem to have gained the upper hand in the GOP these days.

If the GOP-at-large would embrace non-interventionist social policy in the manner it espouses economic policy, I'd probably even vote for one of the buggers.

From the survey results, 61% don't want this silly motto in public buildings either. Very nice.

Yeah, I take those surveys with a grain of salt; anyone can vote as many times as they want to, and it's highly non-scientific. Still, it's heartening that the results weren't overwhelmingly pro-motto. If anything, it at least shows us that the freethinkers among us seem to feel more passionately about the issue than the sheep do.

Senate sponsor Bruce Cairns, R-Aurora, insisted his bill was nonsectarian. "This does not establish any one religion," he said.
:banghead:

This kind of redefinition of words has got to stop. How can it be made to? It's just so frustrating. The level of doublethink required to state such a thing with a straight face is (used to be?) astounding!

Well, in theory they want smaller government. Truth is, neither the Demicans or Republicrats have done anything to make government any smaller. AFAIK only the Libertarians actually plan to make government smaller!

For joedad and DBP, it was 62% when I voted, but that adds the fact that I, a New Yorker, was able to vote on that!
