Statitisical headaches
I've read various things from the creationists that one proof of God's intervention is the immense statistical odds against the spontaneous generation of life in an otherwise hostile universe. Radiation, too much or too little gravity, lack of water, the infinite difficulty of getting atoms to form just the right carbon chains to start life, etc.--all conspire to make the development of life unbelievable except as an act of divine creation.
One big problem with this argument, though, that I haven't seen much discussion of--If God created the universe, then he also created it to be incredibly hostile to life. If his ultimate objective was to create life, why did he do that? It makes no sense. If Christians believe God created the universe so he could bring life into being, can they explain why he created the 99.999999999 percent of the universe that is hostile to life? |
