There is a really big land mass Between asia and europe. It is some times called the americas.This catholic guy named columbo came on the natives.In search of gold. But he found pearls.But he still killed all the brown savages he could find. and whent to jail .cause ? |

When I was little, I used to be obsessed with this point. To be honest, it really doesn't matter to me anymore, but I always wondered:
Why is it called America, when in fact the country is the United States of the continent of (North) America? The problem is, there's no easy way to express that as a label. Again, when I was young, I got into the habit of calling citizens of the USA Unitarians, but it didn't go over very well. ![]() |

It is said that the USA's poetic name is Columbia, thus our capital is the district of Columbia. It's too bad Columbian is taken.
Yankee works pretty well for me. Although, the term is Dutch for a sailor, and equates to John Cheese (similar to Jack Tar). Jan Kees. It would be nice to have something uniquely "American" (haha) to call ourselves, something peotic, you know, like Klingons, or Hecheians (say it like Haitians). Bob |
