Post Moon landing.

I am wondering why so many people think that the moon landing was a hoax. I have been thinking about this for a while and the only thing I have came up with is that it's probably people that don't know anything about Astronomy or people that just don't believe in anything that the goverment says.

So can someone tell me why so many people think it was faked.

Because a world of intricate hoaxes and outrageous government cover-ups is ever so much more exciting than the one we actually live in (of simple hoaxes and pathetic government cover-ups.)

Yes. I love Sci-Fi/Fantasy, plus it's such a good rule.

Conspiracy theories are like religion.

They make people who are insignificant in the grand scope of things feel like they are important. They KNOW the TRUTH. The CONSPIRACY is trying to keep the TRUTH from THEM. Suddenly they are people with special knowledge that are of concern to higher powers instead of being one of a zillion miniscule cogs in a mindless machine that cares nothing about them.

It is a failure of education. People are not taught to think critically. They do not know how to evaluate the credibility of a source. They are not taught the scientific method. This is the source of many of our problems. It's not just the moon hoax, it is why people vote for politicians who lie and contradict themselves, it is why scientific progress is thwarted by religious irrationalists and Luddites who fear technology and medical research, it is why old leaders get away with sending young men off to war on flimsy or non-existence premises.

The more people learn to learn, the better the world will be.

I see it as a failure of imagination. Apparently its not exciting enough that man went to the moon in a spacecraft with less onboard computing power than the PC on which I am typing. Far more exciting, surely, that it was all an elaborate hoax and that the government is lying to us all.

As Jamie said, it helps insignificant people feel significant.

The Bad Astronomy site contains a number of links to rebuttals of the moon landing hoax conspiracy theory.

If you still think it was a hoax after reading these, then you should leave science to the scientists.

Bugger off. We've tried that, and look what a mess they made of it. One minute they're shaking pointy sticks at the sky saying there are holes in it and the next minute they're trying to convince us that we're descended from monkeys!! Do me a favour. If that was true, how come my missus thinks I'm a pig?

The number of people who think the moon landing was a hoax rose dramatically after Fox aired (several times) a one-sided special on the topic. I saw the special, and it presented all the moon landing hoax "questions" while ignoring the simple and plausible answers already known to these questions. After seeing the special, I was left with many (seemly tough) questions about the moon-landing.

However checking on the web I found simple answers to all the questions. Certainly Fox was aware of these answers but chose to completely ignore them. It was deplorable for Fox to have done this and they single-handedly increased public stupidity about the subject a thousand fold. Anyone too lazy to find the other side of the story on their own would be left thinking the moon-landing was likely a hoax. Now NASA has to spend money to try to counter this misinformation attack by Fox. Again, this whole thing is simply deplorable and Fox deserves most of the blame.
