Project for 2003 -- any takers?
I am dead serious about this idea.
I want to develop a desk calendar for 2003. It'll be a standard "Bible-Quote-A-Day" calendar, where each day contains a quote from the bible. Actually, it won't quite be "standard". The quotes will all be about the attrocities that god has committed, and commanded people to do, all about how the world is flat, etc. It would have to be marketed to the general public, of course, not just to people like us who would buy it 'cuz it's funny. I think it would really serve to get God's True Word out to the masses. I know the technical aspect of producing such a calendar. But do you think it would even be possible do distribute such a thing? Any ideas on how that would be done? |

awesome, awesome idea. i don't even have to tell you how freakin' cool it would be to have one of those sitting on my desk at work...
i'd throw in a few verses from my collection of favorites, but i'd also be willing to build a website to sell them (i'd have to learn the e-commerce part of it, but that shouldn't be a big deal). clearly the web would be the best way to handle distribution. since there are a 1,000,001 something-a-day calendars out there, getting it published probably wouldn't be very difficult. one downside though; it'd be tough to update it yearly because after the first one you'd've used most of the heavy hitters. anyway, send me a private message if you're actually going to do this and you want help. -gary |

The Atlanta Freethought Society from time to time put out a wall calendar featuring political cartoons by a late 19th Century American atheist, a contemporary of Ingersoll. I've toyed with the idea of a desk or pocket calendar with important dates in freethought. Marketing would be the main hurdle; groups like Americans United may have beat most of us to that particular punch; but then again the guys who sell those fishies aren't exactly doing badly from the available evidence. Go for it, dude.

Would it be possible for you to market it to us Infidels here on the Internet?
That way you'd be guaranteed a return - just start taking orders, then place YOUR order with a publisher and you're set to go! |

Here are some greats, just begging for this project (Pillaged from the library...):
Judges 19:22-29 II Kings 10:25-27 Hosea 13:16 Leviticus 26:22 And of course, some of these: Genesis 34:1-2 II Kings 18:27 Song of Solomon 5:4 (don't use the sissy re-written NIV... go for the King James!) And if you make one, I want one. |

I'm sure that you could find SOME market for such a calendar, but it would likely be limited to such as the Internet Infidels, members of AHA and FFRF, etc. You would not likely find a market among the general public. (Just go to any bookstore and see how many books they have on atheistic subjects from publishers such as Prometheus and you will get a clue as to how small the market is for such things.) I REALLY like the idea for people like us. If you go with this, I'd like to see your list of Bible quotes and perhaps suggest a few myself. In addition to the atrocities, there are some really silly precepts which you could include (e.g., "He whose testicles are crushed or whose male member is cut off shall not enter the assembly of the LORD." DT 23:1). --Don-- |

It would probably sell if you marketed it simply as a bible quotes calendar, without referencing that it highlights the funny parts, and without linking it to any atheist group. Call it "True Faith 2003" or something like that.
I imagine it might cause a bit of a stink that way, though. Andy edited to add: Never mind, you already mentioned the stealth approach in your OP. [ February 13, 2002: Message edited by: PopeInTheWoods ]</p> |

It probably would be worth it even if such a calendar was bought only by us infidels. I think PopeInTheWoods gets what I am really after (I think I was too subtle in my thread); that being that non-atheist people might see it, say, in Barnes & Noble while they're waiting in line, and add it to their purchasing thinking it would be nice to have some cushy, feel-good bible quotes. Once they put it on their desk and started using it, however, they'd realize that, yes, they're getting bible quotes, but they aren't all cushy and feel-good! A great way, I think, to help enlighten the masses!
Pope's right... it almost definitely would cause a stink. But what could people do? They'd be getting exactly what they paid for! Of course, this factor also addresses cloudyphiz's concern... After the press that would be generated, I don't think I'd need to worry about creating a follow-up the next year. Hmm... anyway, maybe I will do this... |
