Default the sun stands still

I heard-second hand-that documents were found in China referring to a 'long night'.

The christian inference is that during the 'long day' in Israel, it was correspondingly dark in China.

Anyone any info. on this?

Not a "long night," but there are Chinese legends of a "long day," and it's utterly false. Even Christian apologetics and Bible sites admit:
Quote:
The record of the long day has been much debated. Parallels have been found in Chinese, Egyptian and Mexican stories, but these will not coincide with the date or time of day [...] and an astronomical aberration would not have gone unrecorded in Babylon.

Thanks.

Good point about Babylon.

Can't help feeling there's more to it than that but that's my Christian psyche emerging!

If you ever find a reference or article about a Chinese "long night," feel free to post it. But "second-hand" references (by which I'm guessing you mean anecdotal word-of-mouth) aren't terribly useful for determining the truth about something. Keep in mind also that folkloric and mythical parallels between cultures is common; there isn't a single story in the Bible that, to my knowledge, doesn't have a parellel somewhere else.

Bible stories in the mind are a lot like dog crap on a shoe---you never can toatally get rid of it. Well, I can!

I have gotten to the point where I think just about all apologists are liars when it comes to confirmations of Bible miracle claims. Lying for Jesus brings in the big bucks as well as a base of support for elites inside any supposedly "Christian" country.

Do I detect a note of cynicism?

A note? How about a whole symphony!

Personally I've heard or read vague "scientific" assertions so many times I figure Xtian preachers (and new age wingnuts) are behind some of them:

"I heard there was an expedition to a mountain in Turkey where they found the remains of a boat matching the dimensions of Noah's Ark" (this was actually stated as fact to one Sunday school class that I know of)

"More and more scientists are concluding that the universe must have a designer" (a nominally Christian ex-girlfriend told me this. I never saw "Science", "Nature", or even "National Geographic" or "Scientific American" at her house. Maybe she read it in "People").

"Clinical studies have shown that prayer aids in healing." (actually they've shown the exact opposite)

The thing is it only takes a few people lying for Jesus to spread this around. Most of the people who say these crazy things do not realize they're lying. Someone else told them it was true and they just accepted it without question and spread the misinformation to others.

As for the sun standing still, think about the massive amount of force it would require to stop the earth from spinning and then restart it again.

Which is the first clue that the story was written by a geocentric, not a heliocentric, culture.

Not that I need to tell you that, Godless Dave. That was for malookiemaloo.

Another clue is that the writer of the story in Joshua had God stop the sun over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Ajalon

Another clue is that Joshua never existed and was perhaps a characterization of Josiah, King of Judea.
