Default Patrick Henry College and Creationism

http://www.phc.edu/

Their website says that they are now on the road to accreditation. I thought that when they were turned down before that they were told they would have to change their science curriculum before they would be allowed to be accredited.

Also, how do YEC schools like Cedarville or Oral Roberts or Bob Jones keep their accreditation?

We may have covered this before but I can't remember. I do remember a pretty good discussion when Patrick Henry was turned down the first time.

That is rather simple. YEC schools are accredited by a combination of:

1) Some are accredited by organizations that only accredit YEC schools.

But some are accredited by non-fundy accreditors which brings up:

2) Schools do deal with stuff besides the age of the Earth. And some YEC schools have strong world-class programs in non-science areas. Bob Jones University is one on of the best universities in the country in some areas. If memory serves accounting is one of them. For most non-science fields you do not need to know the age of the Earth, etc. to be proficient. It is the university as a whole and not the geology and biology departments that gets a university accredited. It would be more instructive to look at the accreditation of the department and not of the school itself in these situations.

3) And of course there are certainly non-fundy accreditors that are not credible...

PHC is a college intended to take Xian home schoolers and continue their diseducation. I've found the following crap from their corse catalog.
  • Two of the objectives of the Classical Liberal Arts "degree" are "integrate knowledge of biology and physics with faith based on biblical principles" and "understand major biological issues confronting modern scientists."
  • Their math program involves two courses, Algebra and Geometry. Yep, no calculus for home schoolers.
  • Their science progam also involves two courses, Physics and Biology.
  • They do have six bible courses though.
  • Not to mention an english course on the Xian values of Tolkein, "with emphasis on Christian values evident in Middle Earth." I'm guessing that they'll be studying a lot of Sauron.

Incidentally, I think one might get a good glimpse of what an YEC school might look like if it were to be accredited. The CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) put out a list of those ranked by USNWR.

Membership requirements of the CCCU include:
Quote:
2. Christ-centered Mission – Member campuses have a public, board-approved institutional mission or purpose statement that is Christ-centered rooted in the historic Christian faith. Their curricular and extracurricular programs reflect the integration of scholarship, biblical faith and service.
3. Employment Policy – Member campuses have a continuing institutional policy and practice, effective throughout the time they are members, to hire as full-time faculty members and administrators (non-hourly staff) only persons who profess faith in Jesus Christ.
So presumably that excludes places like Baylor and Notre Dame (correct me if I am wrong here).

And an interesting statistic:
Quote:
Context of U.S. Higher Education

According to the U.S. Department of Education, there are about 4,000 degree-granting institutions of higher education in the United States alone. Approximately 1,600 of those are private, nonprofit campuses and about 900 of these colleges and universities are self-defined as “religiously affiliated.” However, only 100 intentionally Christ-centered institutions in the U.S. have qualified for membership in the Council for Christian College & Universities.

Rest assured, they'll not have to change their "science" curriculum to obtain their accreditation. They've got the political connections to make any accreditation problems go away. Take a look at the PHC board of trustees here . Yep -- that's Janet Ashcroft, wife of United States AG & Christian-Taliban wannabe John Ashcroft.

I can honestly say that one of the best things about being gone from Indiana is no longer reading the idiotic star to get news.

Not that the Columbus Cowpatch is much better...
