Actually, I can perhaps think of Catholicism as being harmful. But then, I didn't expect a kind of Spanish Inquisition, or Children's Crusades (tm) or even the plague-ridden Dark Ages.

Or this piece of wonder, from the Joseph Wheless article "Is It God's Word" right here on <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/historical/joseph_wheless/is_it_gods_word/chapter_12.html" target="_blank">Infidels</a>

Father St. Bernard warned his monks that "to seek relief from disease in medicine was in harmony neither with religion nor with the honor and purity of their order." The use of the crude pain-reducing anaesthetist of the times was opposed by the inspired Church; especially their use in childbirth was objected to as an attempt "to avoid one part of the primeval curse on women"; and in 1591, Lady Macalyane was burned alive on Castle Hill in Edinburgh for seeking aid for relief of pain in the birth of her two sons!
I found this while lookin' for information on the Papal Bull which sicced the Holy Ghast on Halley's Comet. (They call 'em bulls? Just add a "hit" on the end, and it might be right )

(Here's an interesting tidbit for ya: Halley's Comet was long held as an omen of ill tidings. It did make an appearance in 12 BC... perhaps around the time Mary "Mother of God" was born? : : )

Magazine, why aren't you an atheist after the many fine arguments showing that theism is non-sense?

NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Amongst our weaponry are such diverse elements as: fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency, an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope, and nice red uniforms - Oh damn!

Well, she certainly did a pretty good job of ignoring a question I posted twice. And yes, it's a challenge to come up with reasons for an atheist to convert to Catholicism. I haven't heard any good ones coming from Gemma yet.

Please!! No more sad and dated allusions to Monty Python. It was funny when I was a lad but It's so OLD for god's sake. Any more of that sort of thing and you leave me no option but resort to the comfy cushions.

???

I'm not sure I need Gemma T's posts to help me decide whether Catholicism is harmful.

I have enjoyed many discussions with Gemma T., not once has she made an argument that was persuasive in favour of accepting that god exists.

Apparently you think atheists should listen to everyone but themselves.

Not at all.

God is not necessary for evil to exist. God is not necessary for good to exist.

But evil cannot exist under an ombenevolent and omnipotent god.

You should check out the other posts on the matter.
