J.P.Moreland
I have just started to re-read Scaling the Secular city by J.P. Moreland. It is a dificult read for me. Who here has read it and what are your views on it?

There are a couple of articles on it in the SecWeb library. Try <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/richard_carrier/moreland.html" target="_blank">this one</a> by Richard Carrier, or <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/jim_lippard/scaling.html" target="_blank">this one</a> by Jim Lippard, or <a href="http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/wesley_robbins/moreland.html" target="_blank">this one</a> by J. Wesley Robbins.

Thanks Bill
I had already found Lippards review but it was rather short. I'll print out Carriers and Robbins and read them all. The Admiral |

Admiral,
I read some chapters of Moreland's book about a year ago, and I must say that I regarded it mostly as an exercise in spotting fallacies and misintepretations. Although, I must admit, there are points where Moreland seems to engage the arguments raised against Christianity in detail, I find his reasoning specious at best. His arguments seem to consist mainly of strawmen, equivocations, and plain falsehoods; this is especially true of the sections where he discusses his views on science and the nature of mind (I mention just these two topics given that I am most familiar with them). All in all, what I could say about the book mostly coincides with the views expressed in the articles pointed out by Bill Snedden - so this is just my $0.02. Prodros... |

I have now finished reading it for the second time and my views concerning it are very much like yours. I have read Lippards, Robbins and Carriers reviews and I think that they were much to kind. He says pretty much the same things that Paul Maier says in "In the Fullness of time" but he uses bigger words to make his phrases sound more erudite. The Admiral |
