Repression in Catholicism and Islam
I know this poll makes sweeping generalizations, but I want to know what people think.

I have a feeling I know where this is going, but I'm going to admit that I voted for nuns. This is because I make a distinction between repression, which is an internal, personal reaction to emotions or feelings; and oppression, as in most Islamic states, where codes of conduct and morality are strictly enforced by law. Nuns choose a life of seclusion and celibacy. Women in Islamic theocracies have no choice about obeying the religious strictures placed on them.

Hmmm... great poll. If things go Gemma's way (which I suspect they will), Roman Catholic nuns will be "the winner". Yay... let's celebrate. :boohoo:
Reminds me of a similar poll: Who is the smarter one of the Three Stooges; Moe, Larrry or Curly? |

I voted Islamic women, but I think this poll could be stated a bit better. For one, it depends on how one defines "repressed". Also, the range of Islamic women is much broader than Catholic nuns. Islamic women range from very secular to very fundamentalist, and from completely voluntary to extreme coercion (the two are not completely intertwined, as some Islamic - and xian - women choose to be fundamentalist). I went with the fundamentalist variety (for Gemma's "sweeping generalization", as they're probably a majority worldwide) to determine my answer.
You might also want to add Southern Baptist women, what with all that "submit to their husbands" crap. Andy |

I wasn't sure if you really meant "OPpressed" or "REpressed", but I decided to take you at your word.
Islamic Women may be greatly OPpressed, but the fact that a significant number actually manage to escape and speak out shows they're not REpressed. They can show their disgust of the situation to each other and to America once they have asylum. RC Nuns, on the other hand, are not at all OPpressed; they chose to go into that vocation of their own free will. However they subdue almost every natural human drive they possess in order to accomplish their vocation. Thus they are not only hands-down the most REpressed of the two groups, they are WILLINGLY REpressed, much like a battered wife staying in an abusive relationship. |

nuns, for reasons Calzaer and mecca already said. And also, because all nuns have shitty lives, but only some Islamic women follow all that oppressive BS.
