Post Non-Sequitor and arguing with Fundies

I think we must pop up a thread where we ask ourselves what part of arguing with fundies we hate most. This comic personifies that!

This is an easy question for me. My biggest beef is fundies who approve of facts when they support their argument, but are quick to say that facts are irrelevant to faith when they oppose their argument.

I argued with a couple about Noah's Ark. She used "facts" to prove to me that the Ark existed. When I debunked her facts, her husband says, "well, you can talk all you want about facts, but I know what's right."

To being with, weren't you the ones talking about facts? And you're basically saying that nothing you ever learn can change your mind? Scary.

I hate it when fundies confuse evolution with abiogenesis and cosmology, or use the "Someone must have put all this here" argument in the serene conviction that no one can ever debunk it.

I've actually lost a friend, who never seemed particularly religious to me, because she couldn't accept that I accepted evolution. She felt stupid because she couldn't understand it, she said, and therefore had to accept the Bible story. When I tried to explain it to her, she said she wasn't listening and walked away.

Stupid people.

Here's my top 10.

10. "It's more logical to believe in God than not to."

9. "Atheists believe we came about through random chance, so they have nothing to live for."

8. "God is Truth, so without Him, you can't say truthfully that He doesn't exist."

7. "We know the Bible is the Word of God because it says so in the Bible and the Bible is the Word of God."

6. "Without God, everyone would run around raping and murdering."

5. "You may have come from a monkey, but I sure didn't."

4. "There is no evidence the earth is more than 6000 years old."

3. "Prove that there is no God."

2. "Atheists are trying to take away my freedom of religion by removing God from school."

1. "I'll pray for you."

Oh, oh, and one more stupid thing:

When, in a Victorian literature class last year, we were talking about Swinburne- a strong atheist poet- one of the other students said, in a disgusted voice, "Why didn't he just commit suicide?"

"What?" asked our teacher.

"Without God, he didn't have anything left to live for."

Stupidest comment I've ever heard outside a direct argument about religion. I really wanted to rip her up one side and down the other.

Later, though, she got depressed when she realized that she would never be able to write poetry as well as Swinburne. Yeah, he didn't have God but he sure could write, couldn't he? .

I was talking about evolution with a fundy recently and his argument was, "If evolution is true and we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?"

I tried to explain, but he insisted that evolutionary theory said that once evolution occurs, the previous species just goes away.

Eventually, I just stopped arguing.

I hate it when they jump immediately from "Someone must have put all this here" to "Christianity is true". Even if I accept that a divine Creator is possible, it does not logically follow that that divine Creator is the Christian god.

Oh, but Godless Dave, don't you realize that all those other creation stories are the stories of FALSE GODS?

Of course they can't be true!

(It's amazing how fundies have not only managed to disprove science, in their view, but have managed to disprove all the other world religions, too- just by using one book!)

Yes, I'm always amazed (and this is another annoying thing about fundies) that they can be certain they just happened to be born into the one, right, heaven-going, wonderful, Lord-blessed denomination.

I mean, what are the odds?
