Post Atheist? An extra $10k for a car.

Seen on King-5 TV tonight. Doug Bettarel, the owner of Better-All Auto in Yakima, WA - upset by the "Under God" ruling - will charge atheists an extra $10,000 for a used automobile. He says he won't ask, but if they volunteer the information, they get the extra charge. He said "if you're an atheist, I don't want to do business with you". (I'll post a link to an article as soon as I can find one).

Another fine example of "freedom of religion" brought to you by the people of Washington State.

Don't you guys have civil rights laws up there? If they are anything like ours in CA, what he's doing would be illegal. I suggest if that's the case you WA atheists should all go to him for your next auto purchase and sue his fanny off.

Depends. I believe the federal civil rights acts don't include religion as a protected class. Of course, the states are free to protect any other classes they see fit. Any Washington residents know if their state constitution/statues/case law include religion as a protected class?

[added]

Duh. I should look before I speak. From the federal Civil Rights Act of 1964:
Quote:
SEC. 202. All persons shall be entitled to be free, at any establishment or place, from discrimination or segregation of any kind on the ground of race, color, religion, or national origin, if such discrimination or segregation is or purports to be required by any law, statute, ordinance, regulation, rule, or order of a State or any agency or political subdivision thereof.
Sue away.

Here is the story reported by <a href="http://www.kapptv.com/index.php?section_id=668&xstate=view_story&story_i d=113684" target="_blank">KAPP TV - Yakima, WA</a>.

I don't think he is affiliated with a car company.

Funny, I don't remember discussing religion with my last car dealer.

Yes, OK, right. But - as has been said a million times in this forum - replace "Atheist" with "Jew". How does "If you're a Jew ... I'm gonna' charge you ten more grand for a car" sound to you? You want to live around here?

P.S. My mother was born Jewish, that technically makes me Jewish.

Angry

Another good suggestion: organize a boycott. Get several religious groups who are against blatant descrimination to join in until he appologizes. Of course, it could backfire.
