Post Sunday School Sophistication

My mother recalls her Sunday-school "education" as being mostly housewives teaching Bible verses, like that infamous verse John 3:16.

They said little about other religions, though they did say that Catholicism was "wrong".

She has a friend who had been raised Catholic, and this friend's Sunday-school education consisted on learning prayers to say to various saints to accomplish various things. With each saint having his/her specialty.

The theory is that saints would intercede with God to grant some request, which suggests a rather bureaucratic sort of Heaven.

I really can't remember what I learned in Sunday school. I guess it couldn't have been too important.

One of the (few) benefits of attending Catholic school was I didn't have to go to Sunday school, for which I am grateful.

All I remember from sunday school is being forced to recite "songs" (chants) where certain lines would be repeated in order to better hammer the points into our little heads.

"yes jesus loves me, yes jesus loves me, yes jesus loves me" etc.

I went to Sunday school all the way through 12th grade, and one day we put up on the whiteboard all the groups of people who must, logically, going to hell: adherents to the other 4 major religions as well as some of the less obscure Eastern ones, occultists, Satanists (obviously), criminals, homosexuals, atheists/agnostics, people who use Ouija boards, "idol worshippers," Christians who don't go to church, Christians who don't repent properly for sins, drug abusers, Catholics, Mormons, Orthodox Christians, JWs, "bad" musicians/artists/authors, people who "corrupt" good Christians, people who have never heard of Jesus, Pagans, magicians, stem cell researchers, evolutionists, Christians who don't evangelize, people who support abortion...

I must admit, though, little-kid-type Sunday school was a bit--if only a bit--more innocuous. I think it's because little kids aren't indoctrinated well enough not to ask questions yet.

I only went once or twice with cousins but what I recall was coloring. I also remember my Assemblies of God cousins singing little songs that I always thought very catchy.

I never went to the little kid sunday school, but i did to the teen one, I remeber this idiot who always had candy and wore headphones, and our teacher (one of the coolest adults around I'll admit) would always say "Give me that I will give it to your mother after the service" and...wow I went to sunday school every sunday for almost a year and don't remeber much, its times like these I feel sad for wasting all that time...back on topic, after a while they split up the sunday school and I, 13, got stuck with the 10 and 11 year olds who couldent use abstact thought, and this one of the things that made me stop going to church.
