Default HIV 1/HIV 2 In Humans Around 1930/1940?

CNN's Health news story.

I was born in 1978, just as (or very shortly before) "AIDS" concern began to pick up steam. I heard little to nothing about the disease until well into junior high (late 80's/early 90's).

Not being a biologist nor an expert on disease progression, I'm curious to know how an STD of this destructive power remained relatively under the radar, so to speak, for so long.

Or maybe I have just forgotten history? I certainly don't recall ever discussing AIDS and its origins in any history class, and in the health related classes it was always mentioned in tandem with the sex-ed material.
