What I never understood is why, if God is so loving and doesn't want people to die, he didn't just decide to forgive everyone's sin without sacrificing himself to himself in order to do it? I mean, it is a bit odd, to decide that in order for you to bear the sight of all these people who've been doing what you told 'em to do (sacrifices and whatnot), you need to come to earth, and kill yourself as a sacrifice to yourself then raise yourself from the dead thus forgiving everybody who accepts you?

Wierdy wierdy wierdy.

Not A Theist: True, EXCEPT, God alledgedly loves us. Would you have a finger broken to save billions of people you love?

Vesica,

One did. He goes by Atticus Finch, and his initial post was highly melodramatic. I personally thought peteyh's reply was right on the money--less dramatic, but clearly illustrating the inherent stupidity of the doctrine of Godly Masochism for Man.

As Technos pointed out, the only difference is the drama of the "bashing head on pavement" method that causes people to respond emotionally, which automatically clouds their reasoning.

'Why is the crucifixion touted as such a big deal?' to the best of my abilities....

You did well. It isn't your fault that the doctrine you were trying to explain has so many logical flaws. peteyh is arguing against the doctrine--not you.

Sorry I can't address 'Why this needed to happen in the first place?'

If you could, I think I could arrange for you to have dinner with the Pope. I'm sure he'd pay handsomely for your answer.

Jayman,

So, the world is now without sin? Sure could have fooled me.

No I don't think the world is without sin. I meant that when someone dies and they're going to go to heaven their sins go to hell.

Their sins go to hell? How can an action or thought go one place while...oh nevermind...ya'll think some invisible part of us travels to someplace called heaven...so nontangibles can go to hell as well

The whole concept sounds so juvenile to me....like my niece's potty training "Doody go down the hole cuz it's nasty"

It's because god was created in man's image

You should put that on a bumper sticker.
