Post Video marketing, Sept.11 and christianity

After i left my last cooking position i sought out a less stressful job that required little responsibility and little thought. I now work, for under the table wages, at an independently owned video store. I sit around, read, write, watch movies and generally goof around. It's pure bliss as far as jobs go.

One of the functions i have to fulfill as part of my job is reading through promotional pamphlets from video distributors. Recently, one of the articles i came across was about the "new market for the spiritually lost and for those seeking spiritual solace" and how the Sept.11 events has opened up "all kinds of opportunities to seize hold of this market".

Of course, the answer for all who have developed a mild to sever case of existential uncertianity is to introduce them to the only true source of comfort and answers, Christianity.

"You don't have to be an evangelical Christian to notice a change of mood in the country. Mainstream America is seeking reconnection with values and religion", states says Bill Sondheim, president of GoodTimes Entertainment (a distributor of christian related movies especially apocalyptic themed movies which are, according to Sondheim "...inspiring for Christian audiences.")

Sondheim goes on to say that "America is in search of answers, and many people are quite confident that God is going to provide those."

The big product that Sondheim is going to push is a virtual bible on a CD-ROM.

"You can have a virtual tour and go to hundreds of sites in the Holy Land, with 360-degree navigational techniques."

The article goes on in length about the need for the return to christian values and that the Sept.11th events, though tragic, has proven to be a great benefit to christianity as the increased sale of bibles has "proven".

"Generic family values don't always cut the mustard...the message of Jesus and redemption is really important to some...who feel it has been ignored, and that subtlety is not what they're looking for", says Sondheim.

Personally, i wrote this distributor back and told them that we did not wish to do business with anyone who would use the events of Sept.11th for their own benefit especially if that use was to promote their own narrow world view.

I really did not appreciate the attitude expressed in the article, that arrogant attitude of self-absorbed superiority that is expressed by so many Christians. How could anyone find solace, answers, comfort or strength anywhere else when the real solution to your every problem is to turn to the Christian faith.

Islam? Judiasm? Krishna? Secular Humanism? "The who? The what?"

Perhaps i over reacted with my letter and perhaps i am foolish for having let a simple little article get me angry but i am growing increasingly tired dealing with this mentality in the world around me. I grow weary of having to deal with people who feel that they posses "THE WAY" to wherever they feel you should be or should be trying to get to. I know i am not alone with this.

I also don't like the attitude that it's "o.k." to push your religion in moments of tragedy as if just being there for someone in need is not enough. I also detest the convenient ommission that the "Christianity" being offered is not done out of charity but to make a profit. Some on this board might admire that kind of mindset but i do not.

Sometimes i just feel tired.

That's why there are certain jobs I know I shouldn't hold. Writing software doesn't typically conflict with my ideals (although when I am supposed to target Windows platforms... grr!)
