Post Offical religion

I continue to hear religionists argue that the First Ammendment prevents the government from establishing an official religion only. Of course, they never seem to address what it would mean if the government did and why that is a concern. As far as I can tell, the only reason to establish an official religion is to be able to pass laws favoring said religion. If that is the case and it is wrong to do that, how is it ok to pass laws favoring religion or a particular religion just because the government has not "officially" established a religion?

It seems to me that religionists think they can do what they are not allowed to do so long as they do admit what it is they are doing.
