Thumbs down Catholic billionaire to build town in Florida

Quote:
NAPLES, Fla. (AP) -- The founder of Domino's Pizza announced plans Wednesday to build a Roman Catholic university and a college town called Ave Maria in Florida.

Tom Monaghan, who has devoted himself to Roman Catholic causes since he sold the pizza chain in 1998, said he has entered into a partnership with developer Barron Collier Cos. to build the town near Naples. In exchange, the developer will donate 750 acres for Ave Maria University.

Monaghan said he founded the Ave Maria Foundation in 1983 "to help get as many people to heaven as possible." He added: "The best way to achieve the goal of the foundation is through Catholic higher education."

Hey Tommy, how about spending some of that dough (pardon the pun) to help make sure starving children in third-world nations can have something to eat? Wouldn't that be a better idea?

What happened to his plan to build a giant cross on his property near the interstate in Michigan or whatever locale is unlucky enough to have him as a resident?

There's nothing wrong with spending money to build a university instead of giving it to charity, but the idea that he's building this university simply to get people into Heaven is bizarre. How is a university supposed to do this? By writing yet new Apologetics? By converting students who are probably already Catholic? Strange...

That's not too bad, Dark. In Latin America, you'll find towns replete with crosses. Standing from the Plaza de Armas in Cusco, Peru, you can see the surrounding mountains covered with huge crosses of all descriptions. Then again, the obvious presence of crosses suggests that Latin culture is Catholic culture. I guess it's not a good thing for the secular person who lives there.

(BTW, ever notice how the old fashioned electric poles all look like crucifixes? Look at the background on that photo...)

Florida can have 'im. God knows Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor want him out. 25 story Crucifix? What an affront to aesthetics among all other things.

And he's got Domino's farms, which has ueber-conservative Catholicism with jumping around and speaking in tongues (but a fairly nifty light show around Xmas).
