Alcoholics Anonymous - *god* help us?!
As my first post here, I'd like to say I hope to come back here often. For now, I have to get this off of my chest TODAY.
I'm a bit dismayed at the attitudes of AA, and their insistance of including God in every piece of their credo. Although they claim their purpose is to guide people to a 'higher power', this is obviously no the case when you get there. Coming from suburban Pennsylvania doesn't help I suppose. Home of the Quakers and Amish and every other mish-mash of pagans. I have actually seen them edit their by-laws IN PRINT, replacing the phrase 'higher power' with 'God'. I'd like anyone's observation about this. I feel uneasy when I am there, because I know what's coming. Today they ended the meeting with the 'lord's prayer' while holding hands. I realize this could be a good option for some people with nowhere else to turn. But as I have been sober for 18 months now, I believe I have the sense and will power to lean on my own support base, and I don't need people even suggesting I join on organized religion. The thing is, I like to relate to the way people deal with their sobriety in a practical way. I'm really trying to be more tolerant, but what is a no-believer to do?! *sorry about the me's and I's - I'm a bit peeved* Edit: I realize AA is designed to be anonymous, but this 'religious suggestion' needs to be addressed. -OkayYou [ January 24, 2002: Message edited by: OkayYou ] [ January 24, 2002: Message edited by: OkayYou ]</p> |
