Why a creationism lobby and not an astrology one?
I think it's interesting that there should be a big creationism lobby and not a big astrology lobby. Where are those who lobby for equal time for astrology in astronomy classes? Where are those who say how terrible it is to teach only "dogmatic materialist astronomy"?

That's easy: whatever the potential merits of astrology , the appeal of creation will always be "I didn't come from no monkey!" Very little else has that grip on the fundy imagination.

Because Creationism is a religious idea, nothing more. Since religion is still pretty powerful, it has a lot of resources to expand. Furthermore, roughly half of people take Creationism seriously. Astrology is in the newspapers, but few people take it seriously.

Perhaps there is no astology lobby because so many people think its just another science. I taught high school science for years and I lost track of the times that I corrected a student's use of the word astrology for astronomy. They would shrug as if to say, "same thing".
At one point, the principal asked the art club to create murals for the school representing the academic disciplines. The science department was asked to suggest themes for our mural. We gave them ideas such as the space shuttle launching, the solar system, a periodic table (the cinderblock wall seemed perfect for that), a caffeine molecule, dna molecules, etc. The resulting mural was a starfield on a black background with two outstretched, disembodied hands. The hands appeared to be juggling signs of the zodiac. It took months to convince the administration that this was not at all scientific and should be replaced. <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[Bang Head]" /> [finally getting to use the banghead smiley!] |
