Post "I have proof hell exists"

OMFG, another Christian friend spewed this shit on me again:

<a href="http://www.nccg.org/338Art-Atheism.html" target="_blank">Belief and unbelief: The cause of atheism.</a>

and, yet again...

Quote:
"As a communist I don't believe in heaven or the Bible but as a scientist I now believe in hell," said Dr. Azzacove. "Needless to say we were shocked to make such a discovery. But we know what we saw and we know what we heard. And we are absolutely convinced that we drilled through the gates of hell!"

Dr. Azzacove continued, ". . .the drill suddenly began to rotate wildly, indicating that we had reached a large empty pocket or cavern. Temperature sensors showed a dramatic increase in heat to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit.

"We lowered a microphone, designed to detect the sounds of plate movements down the shaft. But instead of plate movements we heard a human voice screaming in pain! At first we thought the sound was coming from our own equipment.

"But when we made adjustments our worst suspicions were confirmed. The screams weren't those of a single human, they were the screams of millions of humans!"

What I'm going to play to you now is that actual recording. It's ½ a minute long. What you are going to hear is disturbing. If you don't want to hear it, I suggest you put your fingers in your ears when I turn on the tape recorder.
What do you think of these "proofs"? Makes sense that Dr Azzacove's microphone didn't melt at 2,000 Fahrenheit.

Wow... that's what happens when you let credulous people get ahold of The Onion, I guess.

Weren't these guys the subject of a weekly nut-watch a few short weeks ago?

Quote:
Why do people believe what they believe is surely a very important question, and yet you will find your average Joe Bloggs isn't even interested in why he believes what he believes. He simply makes his mind up to believe or not believe about something, preferring to leave the thinking to others. Such mental laziness can be fatal.
Ah... cognitive psychologists have been trying to crack this nut for years. Crazy thing is, a large part of how I came to be an atheist comes from dissecting my beliefs, and why I believed them and on what grounds. Well, at least he comprehended that second-hand book, the kind he doesn't buy too often .

I have to pack and return home for winter break. Else I'd go over this one with a fine-toothed comb.

Oh my!! The Vicar is chuckling over this one!!

Did a little surfing and found a site that thoroughly debunks this story:

<a href="http://ship-of-fools.com/Myths/03Myth.html" target="_blank">Drilling to Hell (Indeed!)</a>

I think this is even above the Weekly World News' standards. Er... maybe not.....

That sounds very much like an onion story from a while back.

Excerpt from link provided by the Vicar:

'Characteristic of many urban legends, this story was alleged to have occurred in an obscure part of the world where it would be virtually impossible to track down the facts. And once the story got started, people began quoting one another's newsletters to validate their own. This is the stuff of which tabloid newspapers are made.'

Hmmm...I sense a potential analogy. ;-)

Art Bell's website had an audio clip of that. I thought it was quite interesting, but then I'm a bit of an audiophile. If it's the same one Snopes is talking about I disagree with their opinion that it sounds like typical bar noises on a Friday night.

It sounds more like giant fingernails on a giant chalkboard.

It's amusing that the fake article says they expected to hear the sound of the tectonic plates scrapping together, and then when they heard it they thought it's something else...
