I think one should learn to separate ideas from the people originating them. Otherwise, the danger of sliding into hero worship and apologetics is too great.

Well, I don't think there is much danger in my hero worship of Carl Sagan. What's not to like about Sagan? He was a brilliant, well educated, compassionate, free thinker, as well as a talented writer with many original ideas. I think it's healthy to have role models and heroes. They are inspiring. Carl Sagan's writing has inspired me to learn more about the natural sciences, making up for some of the lack of science education that I had in my earlier life. It's not just his ideas that motivated me but the qualities that he had as a person that I admire and respect.

I think most of us here are intelligent enough not to become blinded by our role models. I think we can separate our hero worship from reality. Aside from those semi-serious remarks, I took this thread as a rather light hearted one.

I think any hero worship of Albus Dumbledore is totally justifiable.

I think that's cool as long as you can separate his ideas from Dumbledore himself. I would hate to see you become an apologetic for Dumbledore. That is a danger that you must be careful to avoid.

*hopes galiel will forgive her for having a little fun at his expense even if it wasn't very Carl Sagan of her*
