I think there's ample evidence of cases where atheists are persecuted, and a fair amount of evidence for cases of anti-Christian attitudes that are essentially bigotry. I don't think either of these is a good thing; I'm all for people being allowed to think what they want.

Hmmmmm? Interesting! How many atheists have been permitted to run for, or appointed to, public office since the first Christians arrived in the New World?

How many Christians have persecuted other Christians in America?

Have American Christians ever persecuted American Jews?

Might I suggest that you refrain from reading the fundamentalist "Christian" propaganda and get some accurate facts. What are those so-called Christians doing in those other countries? Who invited them? Why do they think that their supernatural faith beliefs are better than everyone else's beliefs? Isn't that rather arrogant when they don't have one iota of testable evidence that what they claim is true is, in fact, true. A book is proof of little more than the fact that it's a book. And in this case, it is a book about which not even Christians can agree to the interpretations of its contents.

No offense, but if one chooses (as a Christian) to move to a country where religion is mandated by law (and the national religion is NOT Christianity), one is asking for trouble.

If one chooses to do so with the intent of witnessing, one is asking for even more trouble.

In these same countries, atheists are persecuted, too. It's just that atheists don't usually feel the need to proselytize, so they are often closeted.

I've just come out to my parents recently; Their reactions were not terrible. My mother just kind of said, "oh." and my father gave me some static, but nothing that lasted more than 1 minute or so. Afterwards, they both just dropped it and haven't brought it up since.

They were probably the last people I told, everyone else already knew; but thanks to those bumper-stickers I put on my car I had to tell them as soon as they saw me next.

I think every atheist should have some godless bumper-stickers on their car. I, for example, have one that reads "ATHEISM- THERE'S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR BEING RIGHT", and another just below that reads "GOD IS JUST PRETEND". My girlfriend has one that reads "PROUD TO BE AN ATHEIST - <a href="http://WWW.ATHEISTS.ORG"." target="_blank">WWW.ATHEISTS.ORG".</a>

The bumper-stickers are one of the best ways to let every average joe-christian in the Wal-mart parking lot know that Atheists are normal people who live among them, since most christians will just assume everyone they see to be a christian unless something tells them otherwise. The stickers are also a good way to counter all those damn "GOD BLESS AMERICA" stickers that have become so popular lately (they help out with the Jesus fish too).
