Post Do cemeteries piss you off?

They piss me off, just thinking about all the land wasted on cemeteries compared to all the land used for cheap housing for the homeless and such. Cemeteries, to me, are huge plots of land wasted on superstitious beliefs. Id love to see them all bulldozed and made into something useful, rather than a place for kids to hang out and tell ghost stories or play hide and seek.

I also wanna be creamated(sp).

I want to be cremated myself, but I like old cemetaries.

You should check out New Orleans. I have never personally been there but lots of my friends have - apparently they can't bury anyone underground because of water problems (flooding and such - floating coffins are never pretty) and all their dead are buried in these sealed crypt type things - supposedly very beautiful and quite historic.

I actually really like old cemeteries, the ancient monuments and gravestones, especially the ones that are starting to look weathered and overgrown.

I think there are other places that are a lot bigger waste of space than a cemetery. (Can't think of anything profound)

I'm being cremated but I like cemeteries. It's fascinating to see the names and dates and wonder what they were like.

It's also nice for the people left behind to have some comfort. I've gone to many cemeteries to look at my former patients headstones and say goodbye. (even though I'm a strong atheist) Whether they were religious or not makes no difference to me. It's a peacful place. Sometimes I go to a cemetery to have my lunch or make work-related cell phone calls. If they got rid of them all, they'd probably put up a bunch of ugly strip malls anyway.

The whole concept of dressing dead bodies up, placing them in fancy boxes, and burying them in the ground is kind of creepy.

I've made it clear to my family that when I die I want to be disposed of in the cheapest possible legal manner.

Maybe it's not creepy to me because my job is all about death and dying. I'm a visiting hospice nurse. I'm not afraid of death. I'm not going to know I'm dead anyway.
