Post A Yates and Baby Killing....

Anyone else notice the irony between the woman who killed her kids so that they would go to heaven and this website dealing with a fictitious Baby Killing Church of Jesus Christ?

<a href="http://www.abarnett.demon.co.uk/atheism/bkcojc.html" target="_blank">http://www.abarnett.demon.co.uk/atheism/bkcojc.html</a>

I view A. Yates as just another fundamentalist following the bible. Is it not hypocritical for christians to condemn her when she is only following the "good" book?

"Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones."--Psalm 137:9

Or what about Dan Barker's conversation with a woman that he asked if god sending two bears to devour and rip up 42 children was kindness?

The woman replied that "Yes, it is kindness..."

(Page 225 in Losing Faith in Faith)

Another insane Yates or just another christian?

I'm as much for poking out how ridiculous the Bible is as the next atheist, but that's a clear misinterpretaion of Psalm 137:9, which when read in its entirety is clearly not advocating killing babies but rather warns that the enemy is so brutal that killing enemy babies makes them happy....

With due respect, you are not right. Let's look at the actual text of Psalm 137:8-9.

"O daughter of Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall he be who requites you with what you have done to us! Happy shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!"

I agree with Sakpo in this instance.

If you read it the point is that Babylon dashed the babies of other nations against the rocks and they deserve to have it done back to them...there's nothing about this text that says killing babies per se is a good thing...

Evidently the Nazis did this to Jewish babies in this century...

Question

So here is a question:

If religion did not exist then do you think she would have still murdered her children??

Depends on how much of a part religion played in the tragedy.

Helen's interpretation is correct. Read the whole thing. Essentially it states that the Bablyonians rejoiced in dashing enemy babies against the rocks because they're so evil, and they deserve to be utterly destroyed as well. However you interpret it, it certainly can't be used to somehow blame the Yates murders on Christian doctrine.
