Isn't Santorum an uber-Catholic? Isn't he towing the Rome line?

I was at the demonstration today at Santorum's Philadelphia Office. It was rather fun. I didn't get too involved. I just stood on a ledge and held my boyfriend and watched. Only thing I got annoyed about was how some of the demonstrators completely blocked traffic for a while. I think completely blocking traffic is stupid as all hell. But the police eventually showed up and got the demonstrators to block off one direction of one street so they could route the traffic around us. So it all worked out well, nice and peacful, and only 2 cops.

Talking Phone conversation with a Santorum staffer

(from http://www.oliverwillis.com/ -- take it for what it's worth)

SSO: "Senator Santorum's office."

Me: "Hello there... took me awhile to get through. Guess you're
pretty busy what with all this going on."

SSO: "Yes."

Me: "Well I just wanted you to know that my wife and I are big
supporters of the Senator, but we have just one question..."

SSO: "Yes?"

Me: "Does oral sex between a husband and wife, when they're both
consenting... does that constitute sodomy?"

SSO: "Umm.. no. It does not."

Me: "HOT DAMN! (calling out to wife HONEY? GREAT NEWS!"

SSO: (stifles laugh)

Me: "Thank You. Thank You Very Much. Just one more thing..."

SSO: "Yes?"

Me: "How does the Senator feel about doggy-style?"

SSO: "Umm... I can't really speak for the Senator on that."

Me: "Oh Well... Thanks Again!" (Hangs up.)

Any time there's a fracas between the republicans and the gay community, I'm reminded of something a friend of mine said:

"I don't know why republicans are so offended by gay people. 95% of the party is people who seem to enjoy getting screwed in the ass; the other 5% are those who are happy to indulge them."

You'll get the draft dodging dirt. As far as the skirt chasing dirt, you'll have to look further.

Maybe there is hope.

Christian Right Talks of Bolting GOP in 2004

Quote:
Conservative religious activists cite the latest insult: the Republican Party’s failure to rally behind Sen. Rick Santorum, whose comments about the upcoming Supreme Court case on consensual homosexual acts triggered a national firestorm.

. . . Along with other leaders of the politically powerful pro-family movement, Connors was appalled at the "muted defense" of Santorum, R-Pa., who has been under attack by the gay rights lobby and its liberal allies in the media and the Democrat party.
. . .

“The question naturally arises: have Republicans been so intimidated by the smear tactics of the homosexual lobby and its Democratic attack dogs that they are cowering in silence," he wrote.

. . .

Dobson echoed these sentiments during a joint broadcast with Connors on his Focus on the Family radio broadcast.

"Where are the Republicans on this?" he fumed. "I’ve heard very, very little coming from Mark Racicot, the Republican national chairman, or from the White House or from anybody else."

. . .

The Rev. Louis P. Sheldon of Traditional Values Coalition was also angered by Racicot's meeting with HRC. He warned that "this has caused concern among conservatives that Republican leaders are going to sell out on the issue of homosexuality."

Dobson worries that the Santorum controversy indicates the Republican Party’s weak commitment to social issues. He said: "And now that one of the most articulate defenders of family values in the Congress is under attack, Republicans are hiding under a bush somewhere. The lack of courage is amazing."

. . .

It is only "smart politics to always remember to take care of your base. You don’t ever want to alienate your base,” said Farris, an ordained minister and father of 10 who is is president and professor of government at Patrick Henry College.

Farris, who has close ties to the White House, blamed the problem on GOP stupidity. “We’ve been doing a lot of things smart as Republicans, but ignoring Rick Santorum when he needs public reaffirmation is just stupid politics and it will hurt,” he said.

Schlafly Upset

Famed and influential activist Phyllis Schlafly, who single-handedly took down the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, told NewsMax.com she was disturbed by the Republicans' failure to rally around Santorum. She called the administration’s defense of the Pennsylvania Republican "pretty limp" and "most cowardly.”

More good news.

GOP leaders warned to shun agenda of gays

Quote:
The leaders were appalled that Mr. Racicot addressed the March board meeting of the Human Rights Campaign, a group promoting legal protections for homosexuality.

"We were concerned that Bush didn't really know what his party operative was doing in flirting with that group and he could put Bush's entire re-election campaign in jeopardy," Free Congress Foundation President Paul M. Weyrich said in an interview after the meeting with Mr. Racicot.

Religious conservatives strongly oppose the drive by homosexual activists and their allies to win marriagelike legal status for same-sex unions, an issue that Mr. Bush may be forced to confront later this year.

"We urged party leaders not to put President Bush's re-election at risk in 2004 by shrinking from the cultural wars now," said Gary Bauer, a Reagan White House domestic policy adviser, who attended last week's meeting with Mr. Racicot.

Social conservatives at the meeting also criticized the "tepid response" by the RNC to attacks on Sen. Rick Santorum after the Pennsylvania Republican was interviewed about a Supreme Court case involving a Texas sodomy law. Mr. Racicot "insisted that they had been stout in their defense of [Mr. Santorum], yet they did not issue any statement defending Santorum," Mr. Weyrich said.

Mr. Weyrich said he warned the RNC chairman that "if the perception is out there that the party has accepted the homosexual agenda, the leaders of the pro-family community will be unable to help turn out the pro-family voters. It won't matter what we say; people will leave in droves."

The meeting with Mr. Racicot was attended by Richard Land, president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention, as well as representatives of such groups as the Family Research Council (FRC), Concerned Women for America (CWA) and the American Family Association (AFA).

Some of those representatives concluded that Mr. Racicot, Mr. Bush's personal choice to head the Republican National Committee, was "dangerously naive" on homosexual activism.

The Republican flirtation with the homosexual agenda "divides its friends and unites its enemies," Mr. Land told Mr. Racicot.

. . .
Those at the meeting reminded Mr. Racicot that Mr. Bush nearly lost the 2000 election because between 4.5 million and 6 million religious conservative voters who had voted in previous elections stayed home. These "no-shows" were skeptical that Mr. Bush was the man he claimed to be in his presidential campaign.

"If more pro-family people return to the fold next year, Bush can survive even a bad economy," Mr. Bauer, president of American Values, told Mr. Racicot.
For the record, the gay agenda is here.

Are these abominations, really? Let's see...

1) Incest is banned for two reasons - the possibility of pedophilia, and the possibility of deformed offspring. I don't know enough about genetics to discuss the latter point - but if all parties involved are emotionally mature enough to handle it, no problem. (N.B.: I did not mention age here. That is deliberate.)

2) Adultery comes from the idea that marriage should be monogamous. I'd agree with this principle - but if a married couple mutually decides to abandon monogamy, I see no problem here.

3) Why would polygamy/polygny be immoral? Again, if all parties are mature enough, and willingly go along with the arrangement, what's the harm?

I'm aware that these are just "thumbnail" points. I also don't intend for this to be a thread hijack. I'm just asking questions - and I await the responses when I come home from work (I have to leave in a moment.).
