Default Rick Santorum's anti-gay comments

It really bugs me how Santorum stigmatizes gays by linking them to incest, adultery, and polygamy. Why doesn't he also condemn "fornication"? Interesting how fundies pick and choose "abominations" when fomenting fear and hatred in their constituents.... :banghead:

Actually, it's funny that fundies pick on incest as being an abomination, since the Bible, especially the OT, is replete with references to incest and incestuous acts...

The fundies' ability to pick and choose sins truly astounds me sometimes...

No no no. Santorum was simply expressing his disagreement with Griswold v. Connecticut:

"Again, my discussion with the Associated Press was about the Supreme Court privacy case, the constitutional right to privacy in general, and in context of the impact on the family. I am a firm believer that all are equal under the Constitution. My comments should not be misconstrued in any way as a statement on individual lifestyles.”

Santorum Statement

Anyway Santorum has a considerable track record of idiocy, so his comments are not that surprising. That he actually enjoys a position of leadership in the Senate says something, however.

So it seems that Santorum had to throw some bones to the Religious Right because he swerved a little too far towards rationality in a previous move:

Persistent Conflict for Gays and GOP

Quote:
Mr. Santorum perhaps has reason to distance himself from gays — or reach out to conservatives. Earlier this month, as the chief Senate sponsor of President Bush's religion-based initiative, he aroused the ire of conservatives by stripping out a provision that would have helped religious groups get government grants. In fact, the Human Rights Campaign went so far as to praise Mr. Santorum in a news release.

In recent weeks the sensitivity of gays' relationship with Republicans came into the spotlight after Marc Racicot, chairman of the Republican National Committee, met with the Human Rights Campaign. The session enraged the conservative Family Research Council, whose president, Kenneth Connor, said Mr. Racicot was holding "secret meetings with the homosexual lobby."

Today, Mr. Connor came to Mr. Santorum's defense, saying, "I think the senator's remarks are right on the mark."

I think what he meant to say was that if you allow one illegal thing to be done, simply because it was done in the privacy of your own home, then you should allow anything done in private. I do think he said it badly though... And the gays have a right to be upset, I don't see how the state can constitutionally stop them...

Anyway, I think he was more saying that instead of trying to get off, by saying their privacy was invaded, they should of challenged the law itself.

That's what they're doing. They've raised a federal issue, and got 'er into the Big House.

By the way that Kenneth Connor bit is hilarious.

Reading Santorum's statement, I find it curious that he tries to exculpate pedophile Catholic priests by insinuating that alleged liberal permissiveness made them do it.

He also thinks that accepting the legitimacy of homosexual acts somehow threatens the legitimacy of heterosexuality. It's curious how some people believe that there is some supposed great unified entity, "THE family", that is perpetually under siege.

And as to polygamy, he ought to read his Bible.

They took good care of Santorum on the Daily Show last night for this. It was great.

Call me new-fashioned, but there's a big difference between sex acts that are between consenting parties and those that aren't, too.

The biblical-incest connection is naturally of interest and significance, but heck, I'd think that most politicians wouldn't be too keen on stirring up intolerance for adultery either. There has been gobs of that over the years. I know somebody that knows a Sen right now that suprisingly openly hounddogs around on his wife.

Ahhhhh, family values. Those sacred tenets that made the Bush family members such law-abiding, responsible, members of society........

Does anyone know of a website specifically dedicated to reporting, archiving, and tracking, the legal transgressions of members of govt and their immediate families....?
