Angry Symbols and meanings

I got a bit upset reading this article from the SecWeb news wire. I'm sure they're not making other students hide their crosses!

And reading something like this:
Quote:
The school dress code prohibits display of the pentacle, swastika and drug-oriented jewelry. School officials said they banned the pentacle several years ago because its design became associated with devil worship.
... really irks me! I can see their point about the drug-oriented stuff, but saying that a symbol is bad due to associations is a bit off-base.

Having recently lived in SC, I got to witness the huge flap about the use of the Confederate flag. Now, here's a symbol that has become associated withthe KKK! But I'm sure no one raises a stink about a kid wearing the rebel flag on his/her chest! Oh yeah, speaking of the KKK, they also use the CROSS as symbol to spread their hate! Guess we oughta ban that too, since it's got a negative association!

Sorry, wasn't sure where to put this topic, possibly under rants, but I thought the religious overtones merited its inclusion here.

Actually, here in Florida, I recently read that many schools do forbid people to wear the Confederate flag, and some court or other upheld the schools' right to have this rule.

Now, there is no commonly accepted symbol for Roman paganism. So I use the glyph for Jupiter, a symbol created by the astrologers. No one can tell what the future holds, but so far this symbol has never acquired negative connotations.

Its b*llshit. This country was founded on the very basis of this. Freedom of religion, and freedom from religion. Seems this school is going against both of these principles. Freedom of religion means no part of government can tell you what religion to practice, Wiccans inlcuded. They are also subtly pushing xianity on her by not allowing the pentagram, but allowing the xian death device to be worn. This should be an easy case for their lawyer.
