Don't take me too seriously in this thread, I really WAS bored (B4 I came here, not as a result of visiting).

Why play chess?

Life is nothing more than games. You get pride from winning at the games and enjoyment from working towards trying to win. Chess is just another game. So you can play it for enjoyment and maybe pride.

But I very rarely play chess anymore. On the rare occasions I do, (against my dad who is addicted, he usually plays on Yahoo), I also watch TV and read a book simultaneously.

But the reason I rarely play is because it is a small puny game of little consequence. There are other games that have many more possilbe moves and are therefore much more interesting. Games in which more than two people play at once. Games where winning can mean much more good in the world than winning a chess match would mean.

(Ayn Rand said all the great chess players used to be Russian because there wasn't much else for them in communist Russia.)

In the same way there is the game of examining some "practical" philosophy that could actually be applied to real life. And as a result of the application there could be a great increase in the happiness of individual/s. But I fear such possiblities for philosophy have been completely "drowned out" by things like: Kantian Metaphysics, Leibniz's monads, etc. Very silly things in my opinion.

I don't know. I would have to spend a long time analyzing such things and I don't have the time.

Adrian - I wouldn't say anything was a waste of time.

How does one 'waste time' anyway ?

Sitting on the net scratching one's head at the ineffable mysteries, discussing whether or not Godess's name is Yahweh, Eris or Bob ?

Drawing water and carrying sticks ?

Riding one's Donkey ?

Fishing ?

Working in a job that pays you less than you spend but affords you plenty of time to day dream and forces you to adopt a terrible posture ?

Best suggestion for how to waste time wins an extra two hours. Postage not included.

And please don't moderate me away, fellas...NOW I'm being serious.

The best way to waste time is to think about how to waste time and discover that you are not wasting time but instead using it more than you normally would....
